A letter from Jonas

A number of my current and former patients have reached out to express support and concern regarding online posts made about me.

When I first learned of this material, I was understandably concerned. I took the evening to reflect and spoke with trusted colleagues. Rather than reacting immediately, I chose to consider carefully the appropriate course of action.

Some of the commentary references social media posts I made in January. Those posts were withdrawn in short order as I recognized that they were not aligned with my desired role as a professional. They were written during a period when I was experiencing significant personal fear.

As a transgender physician practicing in the current political climate, there have been moments when my safety, the safety of my family, and access to medical care felt uncertain. This continues to be the case. But I am no longer afraid and will conduct myself from a place of peace while elevating the needs of those who depend on me above all else.

This context is not provided as an excuse, but rather as a means of reframing my position. I will not be making political statements moving forward; my focus will remain on my patients and my family.

Some of the online material is presented as coming from a patient perspective. I cannot and will not comment on whether any individual is or has been a patient of mine, nor would I ever discuss the care of any patient without their express permission. Patient confidentiality and professional ethics remain absolute.

My position at this time is measured non-engagement. I do not believe that responding publicly or escalating the situation would serve my patients, my practice, or my family. I will address any threats to my safety or that of my family, as well as libel or slander, through the appropriate channels.

Otherwise, I intend to avoid amplifying the situation. I am at a place in my life where I am strong, well supported, and healthy. Encounters such as this will not detract from my ability to contribute to the lives of others and our community.

What I can speak to without reservation is how I practice. Informed consent and patient autonomy are the foundation of everything I do. I care for patients across the full spectrum of backgrounds, beliefs, and values, and it has always been my goal that every person who comes to me feels heard, respected, and supported in making decisions aligned with their own goals. That commitment is unchanged.

I understand the responsibility I carry in my role, and I take it seriously. Outside of my family, my commitment to my patients, my practice, and society more broadly is my highest professional priority.

To those who have expressed concern for my safety, as well as thoughts and prayers, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

With respect and gratitude,

Jonas Wilson-Leedy, MD
